Is this an official church activity?
It is. That means among other things that 1) by attending you agree to adhere to the standards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the conference, including adhering to the Word of Wisdom (i.e., refraining from the use of alcohol, tobacco and non-prescription narcotics) and other Church-established behavioral guidelines (i.e., refraining from sexual intimacy outside of marriage) and 2) all divorces must be final prior to the conference.
Those who are not members of the Church are very welcome to attend but should also be aware of and agree to abide by these standards.
Where exactly is the conference venue located?
The conference will take place at the Church’s Seneca Lake Camp in Upstate New York’s Finger Lakes region. Nearby small towns include Romulus, Fayette, Geneva and Waterloo. The camp is located about an hour east of Rochester, two hours east of Buffalo, an hour west of Syracuse, and two hours west of Utica. Those coming from greater distances will most likely need to get on the New York State Thruway at some point. If coming from the east, take Thruway Exit 41 and proceed south. From the west, take Thruway Exit 42. Google or Apple maps both can provide detailed directions from there. There’s also a Google map of the area near the camp on our Contact page.
If you’d prefer to travel to the conference via plane or train, both Syracuse and Rochester have airports and train stations with convenient flights and trains available. To get to the conference from an airport or train station you can 1) post on the conference Facebook group to see about getting a ride from a fellow conference attendee or 2) use the Contact page to send us an email stating where and when you’ll be arriving. We’ll do our best to arrange to pick you up and bring you to the conference location.
Sleeping facilities consist of ten cabins grouped in two separate areas of the camp. Each cabin contains eight stacked pairs of bunks for a total capacity of sixteen. The cabins also have a fan, lighting, and electricity, but are otherwise somewhat spartan, since their primary use is for Girls Camp during the summer months.
The bunks have a basic mattress. You’ll want to bring your own pillow/pillowcase, mattress cover / sheets / blanket or sleeping bag.
Each group of cabins has its own restroom / shower building containing three private stall showers.
what are the sleeping accommodations like?
Typical cabin interior showing stacked bunks.
What’s the age range for attendance?
The conference is aimed at the needs of young single adults ranging from 18 to 30 years old. If you’re no older than 30 on the day you register, you’re eligible to attend.
How many YSAS are likely to be in attendance?
In recent years (pre-Covid), attendance at this conference has hovered in the 90+ range. The conference venue can comfortably support up to 160 attendees.
this all sounds great! how can i help my friends know about the conference?
You are welcome to post a link to this website and to the Facebook Group on your LDS YSA Facebook group pages, on Instagram, or wherever your friends are likely to see it online. The more you spread the word, the more likely your friends are to attend!
Young Singles ages 18-30 who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are definitely welcome to attend and you should feel free to invite them.
I really want to come, but I don’t know anyone else who is, and I’m nervous about going alone. Any suggestions?
You are definitely not alone in feeling this. Many who come will be attending an event like this for the first time and will likewise be coming “solo.” The YSAs on the organizing committee will be present to welcome you the minute you arrive. We’ve also woven a number of opportunities into the first day schedule for small-group interaction, whether in the bunkhouses, at the fire pit, during icebreaker games … you get the idea. All of us will make a special effort to connect you with others and help you feel welcome. You can also reach out and start to make some friends even prior to the conference by joining our Facebook Group.
when and where is check-in and on-site registration?
Official “check-in” and late registration starts at noon on Friday at the tables by the parking area as you enter the camp. You’ll receive a nametag and a welcome packet from one of our YSA hosts. Please wear your nametag the entire conference weekend to make it easier for everyone to learn your name.
How do I get around to the various events at the conference?
Most conference events will take place at the Seneca Lake Camp, where the majority of venues will be within reasonable walking distance. For example, it’s about a 5-minute walk from the cabins to the dining hall. However, the walk from the cabins to the waterfront or to the hiking areas is more like 10-15 minutes, so make sure to allow sufficient time to get where you want to go.
For those with mobility issues, golf carts will be available to shuttle you back and forth as needed.
For Church on Sunday and for the historic site tours, we will try to arrange carpools so everyone can ride together to either Fayette or the Palmyra area.
What’s the refund policy?
There are no refunds, but you can sell or transfer your spot if you need to. The Facebook Event page can facilitate this, or you can work directly with the party you wish to sell or transfer to. For potential purchasers, we can verify for you that the seller actually has a valid ticket to sell. Just reach out to us.
If you sell or transfer your registration, please email us, cc’ing the buyer’s email, notifying us of the exchange. In your email, give us your name and the transferee’s name, along with their address info and phone number. Send this email to senecalakeysaconference@gmail.com before the conference, so we can update our registration list.
why do I need to register now instead of paying when I show up?
Pre-registration is important so that we can plan and budget accurately for food, transportation, and other logistical details for the conference. The better we know in advance how many YSAs will attend, the better the conference experience we can provide. Pre-registering benefits you, too, since we can offer you a discounted registration fee.
Who Sponsors the Conference?
The Upstate New York YSA Conference is sponsored annually by the Syracuse New York Coordinating Council of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The conference is co-hosted this year by the Palmyra and Utica stakes, with the support and assistance of other stakes in the council including Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and Owego.
